This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to examine 200 scholarly articles published between 2020 and 2026 concerning competency certification and human capital development in the hospitality and tourism industry. Utilizing the PRISMA 2020 protocol and VOSviewer-based bibliometric analysis, the study aims to address five primary research questions (RQs): (RQ1) How have research trends on hospitality competency certification evolved?; (RQ2) What is the impact of competency certification on workforce productivity and performance?; (RQ3) How relevant are hospitality education curricula to industry requirements?; (RQ4) What factors hinder the effectiveness of competency certification programs?; and (RQ5) What role does competency certification play in career development and employee retention within the hospitality sector? The synthesis results indicate a significant increase in publications during the 2020–2026 period. Bibliometric clustering identified five major thematic areas: core competency, human resource development, service quality, vocational education, and industry sustainability. The findings confirm that competency certification aligned with industry standards significantly enhances human resource performance, reduces skill gaps, and strengthens the competitiveness of hospitality organizations. Policy implications for national certification bodies (BNSP-LSP), hospitality industry managers, and vocational education institutions are formulated based on the synthesized empirical evidence.
